Wordmark Refinement

Typographic refinement for existing wordmarks. When the direction is right, but the drawing needs a sharper eye.

→ Areas of Focus

The direction is already in place. From there, the work focuses on improving what exists: refining letterforms through optical correction, balancing rhythm and spacing, redrawing unresolved details, and making sure the mark holds up across sizes and contexts.

Optical Sizing

For small-scale use, counters can close up, thin strokes can disappear, and spacing can feel tighter than intended. We adjust apertures, weight, and spacing so the wordmark stays clear across sizes. Depending on the project, this may mean one refined artwork for general use, or separate versions optimized for large and small-size applications

Stylistic Tailoring

Existing letterforms can be adjusted to better match a sketch, reference, or art direction. This may mean removing serifs, smoothing a connection, creating a ligature, or redrawing one character so the whole mark feels more intentional.

Wordmark Extensions

A single wordmark sometimes needs related versions for sub-brands, product names, or secondary uses. We adapt selected letters and spacing so the related marks feel connected without simply repeating the original.

Spacing & Kerning

Kerning is often the final layer that makes a wordmark feel finished. We refine the rhythm between letters so the mark feels optically balanced rather than mechanically spaced. In cases where a text face is adapted for a logo, tighter tracking can improve the overall lockup, but it may also disturb the original kerning and require a more careful spacing pass.

Custom Weights & Width

When an available font weight or width does not quite fit, the wordmark may need to be redrawn rather than mechanically adjusted. Outlining, stretching, or compressing letters can distort counters, curves, spacing, and weight distribution. The aim is not simply to make the mark heavier, lighter, wider, or narrower, but to find the right proportion for its size, tone, and use.

Optical Correction

Even when forms are mathematically consistent, they may not look balanced. We adjust curves, joins, overshoots, and alignments so the mark feels balanced to the eye, not just measured.

→ Scope

This service is intended for wordmarks with an established direction. It does not typically include logo concept development, broader identity strategy, or projects where the core visual direction is still undecided.

What to Expect

Not the Focus

Refining letterforms based on an existing sketch or wordmark
Logo exploration or concept development

Correcting spacing, rhythm, weight, and structural inconsistencies
Broader identity strategy or art direction

Improving the craft quality of an established direction
Projects where the core visual direction is still undecided

Designed For

○ Graphic designers with an established direction who want a specialist eye on the final drawing
○ Brand studios and agencies looking for a focused typographic craft pass
○ In-house teams refining an existing mark without changing the broader identity

Deliverables

Deliverables may include refined vector artwork, along with a short note outlining the main adjustments and the reasoning behind them.

Scope Note

This process typically involves redrawing from outlined artwork rather than modifying font software directly. If the wordmark is based on a third-party typeface, the client is responsible for securing the appropriate licenses and permissions for the intended use.
